Comment on a teaching idea

The main idea of  www.thinkquest.org is to provide an online platform with which students from Germany and the USA are able to not only comunicate, but further work in groups in order to carry out a scheme, or participate in a competition.

Students from the Carl-Zeiss-Oberschule, Berlin and the Maria-Montessori-Schule in Columbus/Ohio, USA are working together in a team. However, only members from each group can work on their projects. Nevertheless, the outcome of the group work can be checked by all Think.com members. I.e. students can create websites written in the target language. As a student you just have to sign in, draw up a project by finding a suitable topic, and then you can add members from your class or others from around the world who want to participate. Next, you have to create your project by adding texts, pictures, multimedia, interactive discussions and so forth. Finally, all members of the project should keep in touch and comunicate via a project calendar and a news tool. Last but not least, you should not forget to be up to date by checking different projects from other Think.com members and finding new inspiration for your next project.

What are the different aims of this website?

Students get the chance to comunicate easily with other native speakers. In order to maintain the communication, students are forced to write texts using the foreign language. Further, students don't only receive information from native speakers and from other countries, but they learn how to present this information on a website by structuring the content and underlining it with images, pictures and texts. I like the idea that students become more indipendent for they can choose the topics they want to write or debate about. Furthermore, there are plenty of different communication tools which the students can make use of, such as wall, voting tool, brainstormingfunction etc.. All in all, students can work freely and enjoy the possibility to interact with other students from all over the world in order to create an interesting project.

Clicking on this link you will be able to follow a demonstration how the website is supposed to work. It is explained pretty well so that it is easy to understand.
